Wonderberry rebrand iconic British brand

Wonderberry creates brand new look for iconic British brand

To celebrate Arthur Price of England’s 110th anniversary in 2012, Wonderberry were briefed to create a new brand identity for the UK’s leading cutlery and silverware manufacturer.

Wonderberry’s Creative Director, Patrick, explains the rationale behind the updated logo; “The graphic device that we’ve created is inspired by Arthur Price of England’s traditional English values. The new logo incorporates distinct elements that help to define the company’s ethos. There are also aspects of the design that are more personal. For example the three white roses are symbolic of hope and love, but they also represent CEO Simon’s three children. As a family owned British company that has had five generations of Price working for the business this was an important message for us to convey.

“Renowned for combining traditional skills, uncompromising quality, as well as technical and design innovation, Arthur Price of England has a unique heritage to communicate. The Latin motto ‘fidelis muneris’ translates as ‘faithful service’, highlighting their ongoing commitment to first class customer care. The symbolism within the crest also extends to the colours used so gold denotes generosity; red for strength and magnanimity; green for hope; and silver for sincerity.

The other graphic elements have been carefully selected to signify important attributes that all help to tell the complete Arthur Price of England story.”

Red shield – Strength
Eagle – Noble nature
Hammer – Emblem of the silversmith’s trade
Gold lions – Courage, bravery, strength and valour
Three spoons – Emblematic of products manufactured
Oak leaves – Continuous growth and family heritage

Arthur Price Factory Shop heads outdoors

We’ve been producing ads and booking media for Arthur Price’s Factory Shop quarterly sales for 7 years using a range of local print media. Wherever possible we use uniquely coded discount vouchers in order to be able to track the effectiveness of each publication. Over time we’ve been able to whittle down our media schedule to ensure that each campaign is as cost effective as possible.

Recently, we’ve been trialling some outdoor alternatives including bus sides and 48 sheet posters in key locations coming into and out of Lichfield. So far the sale results have been up so we’ll see what the next sale holds.

Whilst the media landscape continues to fragment, ‘Out of Home’ advertising is able to retain its ability to reach masses.  In recent studies* 66% of respondents felt that Out of Home advertising offers a welcome distraction to the mundanities of life – particularly travelling. Additionally, 74% of respondents expect to see big brands using Out of Home.  Which means that carefully selected site can really help to raise brand awareness and audience perceptions.

100 years since the sinking of the Titanic

100 years since the sinking of the Titanic – watch this space…

It’s hard to believe but in April 2012, it will be 100 years since the tragic sinking of RMS Titanic. To commemorate the date, three major organisations are planning a special collaboration: 20th Century Fox, Royal Crown Derby and Arthur Price (a long-standing Wonderberry client).

So, what can we expect? Well, plans are still being finalised but here’s a sneak preview: Arthur Price has recreated the Panel Reed cutlery that was used in First Class accommodation on board. Each knife features the White Star Line’s famous logo on its blade, just as they were produced for the maiden voyage. Royal Crown Derby has reproduced the exquisite fine bone china which was chosen for the 1st class a la carte restaurant, while 20th Century Fox, one of the original movie giants behind the 1997 film Titanic, has announced the re-release of the film, starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, set for 6 April 2012, this time to be shown in stunning 3D animation.

More details about the tie-up will be revealed in our next newsletter!

Arthur Price of England commemorates the Titanic’s centenary

Arthur Price of England commemorates the Titanic’s centenary
by creating the cutlery used in First Class 1912-2012

In April 1912, A. Price & Co. Ltd, as the company was then known, was based in a small factory at Conybere Street, Birmingham. Arthur Price and his employees were celebrating the business’ 10th anniversary with a recent commission to supply their premium quality cutlery for use on board the world’s newest and most opulent ocean liner, RMS Titanic.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Titanic’s fateful maiden voyage, Arthur Price of England has recreated the Panel Reed cutlery that was used in the First Class accommodation. Each knife features the ship owner, White Star Line’s famous logo on its blade just as they were originally.

Over the years, the interest and intrigue that surrounds the Titanic has not diminished. As the largest passenger liner of its day, built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, there remains an eternal fascination around the tragic story. This was in part fuelled by the long awaited discovery of the ship’s wreck which was finally located on 1st September 1985 and the subsequent expeditions to recover artefacts from 2.5 miles below the surface of the ocean.

Commander Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a co-leader during five separate expeditions to research the Titanic wreck site, was fortunate enough to witness the retrieval of some of Arthur Price’s cutlery from the bed of the Atlantic.

In a letter to Simon Price, great grandson of Arthur Price and current chief executive of the family business, Commander Nargeolet recalls his findings:

“I examined recovered silverware from Titanic that I believe are exactly the same silverware as the Dubarry and Panel Reed examples I recently examined produced by your company.

The Dubarry was recovered in 1987 from the debris field and the Panel Reed was recovered from one of the Titanic’s copper dishwashers discovered near the stern section of the wreck in 1994.”

The cutlery company’s connection with the ship’s history continued when, prior to the film’s release in 1997, Arthur Price were also approached by the production team of James Cameron’s romantic epic featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. The multi-Oscar winning and highest grossing film of all time (until 2010) used Arthur Price’s Dubarry cutlery during the dining scenes set onboard Titanic.

The Titanic centennial edition comprises of 11 loose pieces of cutlery, as well as, gift boxed hostess pieces that include a cheese knife, pie knife and letter opener. Loose pieces start from £40.00.

Simon Price explains: “The tale of the Titanic has remained in my family for generations. It’s an honour for me to be able to commemorate this historic anniversary and make a tribute to the memory of all those that lost their lives in one of deadliest peacetime maritime disasters. My Great Grandfather built this company on his belief in fine British craftsmanship and uncompromising quality, something we still stand by today. I know he would have been proud of the Panel Reed pieces that we’ve produced. All the items in the centenary collection will be supplied with a personally signed certificate of authentication, so I hope you’ll be happy using this wonderful cutlery. It was Arthur Price’s resolve to produce only the very best that guaranteed the selection of his cutlery for use on the finest areas onboard the ship and although these commemorative pieces are essential items for all Titanic collectors, they are also built for use everyday and to stand the test
of time.”

We’ve got NPD all wrapped up

Wonderberry has created and launched a huge number of products for clients over the years and recently, we’ve been working with long-standing client Arthur Price on some exciting additions to their hugely successful Arthur Price Kitchen range (their best-selling sub brand since launching Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen’s first range more than a decade ago).

Our close relationship with Arthur Price means we are treated to a liberal helping of creative licence in suggesting products which we feel suit the brand – and as a result of very healthy sales figures, we have just launched a new line of Arthur Price Kitchen accessories including cheese knives, olive spoons and stylish ceramic dipping bowls set on a slate base.

It’s been very rewarding to watch the range take shape; from the early days of product design, development and testing, through to packaging concepts, PoS displays, advertising campaigns and producing marketing materials for Spring Fair earlier this year.

If you have any queries about NPD and packaging, please let us know. We’d love to help!

Award winning jeweller, Nicholas James and the UK’s leading cutlery and silverware company, Arthur Price of England unveil their eagerly anticipated bespoke spherical pendant lamp constructed from 738 serving spoons, 600 LED’s and 150 diamonds. This prestigious commission now on sale in Harrods is a tour de force of British craftsmanship with all the elements produced
by hand.

Conceived by Nick Fitch, design and owner of Nicholas James, this spectacular one-off showcase has been a unique collaboration between highly specialised British companies, responding to the challenge to produce the 600mm diameter, 65kg sphere.

The 738 Arthur Price of England finest quality 18/10 stainless steel serving spoons are formed in 15 concentric layers and secured with over 30,000 precision laser welds all completed by hand. Of the spoons, 150 have been individually set with 7 carats of diamonds. Internally lit by 600 LED bulbs the Orb is a truly magnificent structure that celebrates exceptional design and sublime engineering.

Simon Price, CEO of the family-owned business, Arthur Price, explains the drive behind the partnership; “We’re both bound by our life-long passion for precious metals. I was introduced to Nick’s work a number of years and admire his integrity and pioneering spirit. Our respective companies embrace similar values and we’re stalwart champions of British craftsmanship.”

The Orb lamp is the latest in a series of unusual assignments that transfer Nick’s design philosophy and jeweller’s skills to create highly desirable and stylish pieces that both surprise and delight.

Nick explains; “The principle behind the design was to convey simplicity through the shape of the globe. Yet on closer inspection it’s apparent that the structure has been formed from spoons. The integrity of each piece of cutlery remains and is collectively sculpted to form something entirely new.  This project has been about pushing boundaries and it’s involved some amazing British companies that all really excel in their field. With their technical expertise and dedication we’ve produced an exceptional piece of creative engineering that marries our skills, captures the imagination and challenges convention.”
